WRS — DOE Information Bridge

Wednesday, December 14th, 2005

This week’s resource spotlight is on DOE Information Bridge. This resource from the US Department of Energy allows you to search research literature submitted to the DOE by any of its branches or contractors. These technical reports contain a wealth of information on topics in a variety of fields. The reports are not peer-reviewed and tend to contain more jargon and technical terminology than most journal articles, but are the best resource for detailed and specific information on a particular project.

DOE Information Bridge’s advanced search allows you to search in any combination of multiple fields, including author, title, keyword, research organization, sponsor organization, conference information, and identifier number. You can also limit your search to a particular publication date range or to a specific type of report (conference proceedings, software manual, technical report, patent application, etc).

The search returns full bibliographic information, including multiple identifier numbers, and full text in .PDF format.

WRS — ISI HighlyCited

Tuesday, December 6th, 2005

This week’s spotlight is on The Institute for Scientific Information’s ISIHighlyCited. This resource, from the same folks that give you Science Citation Index, allows researchers to search for information a specific researcher, or to identify the most highly cited individuals in any of a number of scientific fields.

From the main page the “Search” link allows you to search for a specific researcher by name, allowing limitations for country, institution, and field. The “Browse” link allows you to browse the list of most highly cited individuals in a given field, country, or institution. The names returned link to an individual researcher page with biographical information, contact information, simple vita, and a link to publication lists. The entries in the publication list are hyperlinked to ISI’s abstract for that publication. One flaw is that the resource does not currently support a ranked list of researchers — it simply returns the researchers ISI has determened as the most highly cited in an alphabetical listing.

Satellite Atlas of the World

Thursday, December 1st, 2005

New Reference Book:

Satellite Atlas of the World
by Sir Ranulf Fiennes
New York: Oxford University Press, 2004
Call# REF G1046 .A43 N63 2004

From Oxford University Press:

“At the right distance the arresting presence of mountain ranges and the sheer artistry of graceful coastlines and meandering rivers emerge from the landscape. Terrains both strange and familiar become unfathomable abstractions from above. As the Earth’s surface changes, and our ability to capture the impact of physical geography and human demography through satellite imaging improves, snapshots from outside the atmosphere are frequently turned to as valuable tools for understanding. More than a collection of aerial photographs or an example of a high-tech art form, the Satellite Atlas of the World is a detailed rendering of scientific data. Within this book, the latest satellite technology has been used to produce images of unparalleled clarity and color, providing beautiful photographs of countries, seas, mountains and lakes from an entirely new perspective.

Covering six continents, the atlas begins with long shots of each region, moving in to focus on specific countries as well as familiar landmarks such as the Pyramids at Giza along with magnificent views of world’s cities. Continent by continent, the magnification is progressively refined in a series of stunning pictures as the camera moves closer to the Earth. A brief introduction discusses the imaging techniques and mapping scales used, and captions on each page supply the reader with nuggets of historical and statistical information about each of the areas captured digitally.

More than a reference book or an album of artwork, the Satellite Atlas of the World is a unique representation of Earth in transition. Enthusiasts of photography and geography alike will marvel at the highest, widest, most densely populated and unusual terrains in images that offer an unforgettable portrait of our planet in the 21st century.”
