WRS — Ingenta

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

Ingenta is a document delivery service. For articles or papers that the library does not own but are contained in Ingenta, you can request a .pdf or fax of the material within 48 hours. LSU Libraries will subsidize the cost up to $40 per article.
For those of you who use Ingenta as a document delivery service, there is a new interface here: http://lsu.library.ingentaconnect.com/. You should find it a little easier to use than the last incarnation.

For those who need a refresher on accessing Ingenta here is a copy of the instruction sheet:

Accessing Ingenta: Instruction Sheet

(For any questions or additional information see the Interlibrary Borrowing web page (http://www.lib.lsu.edu/lib/ilb/ ) or call (225) 578-2138.

  • Finding your way to the Louisiana State University Gateway Logon Screen:
    • From the LSU Libraries homepage (http://www.lib.lsu.edu/), click on the Ingenta link under Services.
    • Navigate through the subsequent connection/authentication pages – if you are connecting to the LSU Ingenta gateway from off campus, you are required to demonstrate your university affiliation by entering your 17-digit Tiger Card ID Number and your PIN.
    • After authentication/connection to the gateway, you arrive at the Logon Screen
  • Logging in to the Louisiana State University Ingenta Gateway:
    • University Faculty, Research Staff, and Graduate Students are able to create User IDs and Passwords for use in logging into the Ingenta gateway. At any time after you create a User ID and Password and forget either, you can retrieve this information by clicking the “forgot your password?” link on the Logon Screen.
    • New users have two options for creating User IDs and Passwords:
      • Creating a User ID and Password by entering your 17-digit Tiger Card ID Number:
        • Enter your 17-digit Tiger Card ID Number in the field on the Logon page that asks for it specifically.
        • Once you are recognized as a Faculty member, Research Staff, or Graduate Student, you will be taken to a registration page where you can create a User ID and Password for using the LSU Ingenta Gateway.
        • Now that you have a User ID and Password, you can login to the gateway from the Logon Page – your profile is saved and your User ID is now, already, connected to our Patrons Deposit Account, which is used to subsidize your Ingenta purchases (up to $40 per article).
        • If your ID Number is not recognized by Ingenta, then you should register for a User ID and Password by clicking the Register button on the Logon Page. Some users’ IDs are not recognized at the beginning of a semester, before new patron information is sent to Ingenta.
      • Creating a User ID and Password by registering as a new user:
        • Click the Register button on the Logon Page to complete the registration form; the only difference between registering by clicking the Register button and registering by entering your 17-digit Tiger Card ID number is that you will not be connected to the Patrons Deposit Account if you register by clicking the Register button.
        • Therefore, after completing this form and selecting a User ID and Password, send an email to Gayle Campbell at libilb@lsu.edu with your User ID and Password, telling her that you are a new user and would like to be connected to the Patrons Deposit Account.
        • She will connect your profile to the account, which is used to subsidize your Ingenta purchases (up to $40 per article).
    • You can always use your User ID and Password, once you have them, to login to the LSU Ingenta Gateway, and you should always use your original User ID – if you create a second User ID, it will not be connected to the Patrons Deposit Account and your article purchases will not be subsidized by LSU Libraries.

Large items wishlist

Thursday, July 6th, 2006

We have some money left over in the large items fund — this fund pays for one-time purchases of over $1000. If there is an item you would like to see the library acquire — an expensive book series, a CD-ROM package, etc. let me know and I’ll put in a request. As always, email jryan1@lsu.edu.

Library Use Survey

Friday, June 30th, 2006

A print library use survey will be conducted for two hours once a month in Middleton; twice a month for two hours each in Hill Memorial Library; twice a month for two hours each in the Veterinary Medicine Library; and an electronic briefer survey for the same random times each month when accessing library electronic resources.

The surveying will commence in the next two weeks and will continue over a twelve month period.

Cooperation in completing the surveys will be helpful to the library in determining how library facilities, materials, and services are being used.

Thank you for your assistance.

What do you want from this resource?

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

So far I’ve limited myself primarily to new book announcements and weekly resource spotlights, but I’d like to expand the content of this blog somewhat over the summer. What kind of things would you like to see posted here? Please post a comment here or email me at jryan1@lsu.edu.

WRS — WebFeat

Wednesday, April 5th, 2006

This week’s Resource Spotlight is on a brand new resource now offered by the library: WebFeat.

Webfeat allows you to search over 100 separate databases at once. You can select which databases to search, or search them all. You can limit your search to full text only, or to a publication date range. WebFeat allows upto three terms combinable by AND, OR, or NOT. You can search by keyword, author, title, abstract, or subject. You can also limit your search to General Reference, Arts & Humanities, Biological Sciences, Business, Government, Sciences & Technology, or Social Sciences, as well as to subcategories of each. In addition, you can search the catalogs of the entire Louisiana Academic Library Information Network Consortium of academic libraries across the state.

The results page shows the number of citations found in each database searched, with a description of the database coverage and a link. Clicking on the link takes you to the list of citations, with a link to full text if available. Clicking on “View” takes you into the database searched, with access to each of that database’s unique features.

WebFeat is an exciting new resource that promises to streamline the searching process and provide more complete results to a query. As always, feedback on this resource is greatly appreciated.

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

The American Institute of Physics is pleased to announce that its Scitation Usage Report Service (SURS) (http://www.scitationreports.org) is now fully COUNTER compliant. This means that all processing and reporting of usage data conform to the Code of Practice developed by Project COUNTER, an industry initiative that provides guidelines for the measurement, creation, and distribution of online usage reports to institutional subscribers.

Book suggestions

Wednesday, February 1st, 2006

Spring ordering is upon us and I am once again taking suggestions for books to be ordered for Middleton. Because of budget issues, we have less money this semester than anticipated, so unlike last semester I cannot guarantee that all recommended books will in fact be ordered. However I will do my best.

Please send suggestions to jryan1@lsu.edu.

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

From Chemical Abstracts Service:

“In an industry first, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) demonstrated the delivery of chemical information, including structures, via live interaction using BlackBerry® and other handheld devices at the CAS European conference in Vienna this week. More than 20 handheld devices were used simultaneously by conference participants to retrieve hundreds of literature references as well as molecular structure and related data for specific substances in real time.”
